I have spent my life on a womanly quest, often ending in heartbreak {or heartbreakingly awkward photos}. I earnestly sought an answer, striving to be cool, or at least not uncool. It was a gift my mother could not pass down, a challenge my sister did not share. I journeyed alone and it took me 30 years to arrive. I wanted bangs.

First things first can we talk about how much I love the balcony-ette at the new Dean Street Studio?! I was on a mini mission with #ChooseJoyJune as something I'm trying to embrace more every month of the year: little intentional moments.

Smitten to be featured on Better Homes & Gardens style alongside some of my favorite fellow style bloggers! Check out Jessie, Hallie, Caroline and Beth with our unique spins on one classic little shirtdress. A pale blue washes me out a bit, so to make it pop more I added black and white stripes beneath in the form of a tight light crop top {one that is sometime too form-fitting to wear alone, but is perfect for laying beneath}.

I would like to thank our founding fathers here in America for choosing stripes as our patriotic print. Stars I can pass on, but I'm delighted to triple-stripe it in preppy red and blue to feel festive. I'm giving my tips on how to pull-off this 4th of July holiday look alongside fabulous Em of The Refined Woman {who's other half Kat photographed moi} over on darling Verily Magazine!

I am morally opposed to sweatpants. That's always been my line. But then the fashion industry went and made sweatpants not just "I've given up on feeling sexy chic and the Spanx I wear to work are so uncomfortable I spend all day dreaming about these nubby fabric-ed gray things the moment I walk in the door" but "I'm kinda badass and have the kind of life where I can rock slouchy pants and feel like a rockstar".

One of my favorite things about Brooklyn is how it can feel so different around one corner or another. There are parts of Clinton Hill that feel like Savannah, Georgia and spots in Park Slope that feel like you've wandered onto an ivy league campus. I love that same diversity in my style. I love to be surprised, empowered -- to take a velvet bow top and a knee length skirt, and make them feel a little edgy because the top is cropped and the skirt leather; to wear a high neck and a low hem but keep it fresh with a modern purse, kicky heels and loads of bangles.

Right now as we're in the middle of our FREE 3 Steps to Simplified Style video series, so many bettys are hitting reply on my emails to let me know what they're struggling with in their style and one of the most repeating themes is "I don't know how to dress for my body ... for my height, my changed shape, my weight loss, my problem area". And while not an instant answer, my reply is always, "When you think about all the diversity that exists in every single area we're trying to get into one pair of pants or a dress ... calves, knees, thighs, hips, stomachs, derrieres, waists, rib cages, busts, shoulders ... it's a marvel any of us can find clothing at mass retailers!"

I put her on for church and thought, "Is she too much? The volume? The color?" So I did my best to tone her town. Simple grey long-sleeved tee, casual hair and makeup.
