How to Up Your Fashion Style

A stylist needs to be sartorially pushed just as much as anyone else. In the same way a professional dancer can always get better, learning a new technique or flourish from a fellow dancer. The truth is, I have many less "professionally stylish" friends now, than I did when I was a dancer. As a performer so many friends were in my world -- we met through auditions, took class together, were cast in shows. Now my life is lived much more online, with some "friends' being people I've never met face-to-face to see only very rarely. Therefore, I treasure the fashionable friends I do have when I get the chance to soak 'em up in real life.

Jessie of Style & Pepper, & Anna of Tulip Louise are two of those gals. Anna & I met when we both spoke at Pepperologie -- an event Jessie hosted last spring. During Anna's session I played model & she put me in this extra long white vest. It was something I never would have even thought to pick-up off the rack. And I kiiiiinda felt like the hotness. Actually I felt like Rachel Zoe in that whole ensemble. {Right?!} Which might not necessarily be "me", but it was new, fun, outside the box & opened my eyes to this long vest below that I previously would have walked right on by in the store.

So today loves, I'm with you: Let's be open to new ideas & expanding our style. It doesn't have to be head to toe, but just one piece like this vest, paired back to an otherwise totally "me" outfit, feels authentic yet new. Perfect for that almost barely not quite yet nip in the air that says newness is happening all over this fall.

The reason I can pull this vest off, goes back to my beloved Two-Part Fashion Cocktail. The dress is enough cranberry -- great feminine fit & color -- that the more masculine vodka energy of the vest doesn't overwhelm me. To make sure, I added a feminine purse, heels & bangles -- more sweet cranberry elements -- so I didn't look too sporty nor too tomboy, but just an easy breezy Hamptons-bound version of moi!

Alright betty, now it's your turn. What's one thing you've seen recently that you could go outside the box & try? It could be a hairstyle or make-up. Perhaps something you saw a friend wear that you could borrow from her closet to give it a whirl? Something in a shop window that you can at least try on in the dressing room & snap a pic to get a friend's opinion?

Commit to stretching your style with me this week. I have a feeling neither of us has fully stretched our wings yet.

P.S. As if celebrating the re-launch of Dean Street Society last week on my two-year anniversary weren't enough, I'm a part of another re-launch this week! It's happening on Wednesday & m'dear, I am oh so excited to introduce you to someone named Clementine. I promise the two of you are going to become very good friends. Stay tuned ...
